Local Merchants End Pre-Christmas Sales on High Note
December 27, 2006
Norfolk, VA - With an extra full weekend of shopping before Christmas, local consumers came through with strong sales at Hampton Roads retailers, according to survey results in the third annual RETAIL ALLIANCE Holiday Sales Watch, a weekly snapshot of retail activity in Hampton Roads.
All survey respondents reported sales up or even over the same period last year, with increases ranging from as low as 4 percent to as high as 60 percent. Most retailers were unable to identify “hot” items, saying that consumers were purchasing a wide variety of gifts in this last pre-Christmas shopping weekend.
And, with Christmas closing in, shoppers were in surprisingly good moods, according to merchants. People knew it was time to get serious and make their purchasing decisions. Merchants reported shoppers were “pleasant” and in positive spirits throughout the weekend.
Nationally, this past weekend’s retail sales results fell short of expectations. Retailers are hoping that the final week of the year will provide another boost to sales, as people spend holiday cash and redeem gift cards.
