Retail Alliance Sponsors Fourth Annual Loss Prevention Conference

September 12, 2005

Norfolk, VA - Spending time with loss prevention experts can give retailers the edge to protect their business from retail theft losses. Those experts can be found locally at the fourth annual Retail Alliance Loss Prevention Conference on Tuesday, September 27, at the Chesapeake Conference Center.

“This conference is an excellent local opportunity to hear from nationally recognized leaders in the loss prevention industry,” said Susan Stutzman-Box with the Retail Alliance Loss Prevention Task Force and a member of the conference planning committee. “The conference is so affordable, and it doesn’t involve travel costs,” Stutzman-Box continued. “This is a great opportunity for local loss prevention, law enforcement and security personnel who may not be able to travel to national conferences.”

As the state’s leader in helping retailers with loss prevention strategies, the Retail Alliance has re-designed this year’s conference to meet the specific needs of both small merchants and larger “big box” stores. The conference will feature a distinguished line-up of local, state and national experts from various disciplines of loss prevention.

King Rogers, director of strategy for the Loss Prevention Research Council, and CEO of King Rogers, Inc., will deliver a keynote address on organized retail crime, including its history, current state of activity, where it appears to be headed and what needs to be done about it. Joseph A. Yuhasz, Special Agent, and David Huff, Task Force Officer, with the Norfolk FBI, will bring a local perspective on shoplifting and its ties to organized crime. In a third keynote address, Brett Ward, CFI, director of private division, senior investigator and instructor with the national consulting firm of Wicklander-Zulawski & Associates, Inc., will discuss workplace violence and provide training on identifying and assessing threats.

Workshop presenters include John Bishop, regional director of loss prevention for Saks Incorporated, who will talk about loss prevention for smaller retailers and lateral thinking in retail investigations for larger stores. Local attorney William C. Bischoff of Stallings & Bischoff, P.C. will discuss civil and criminal strategies for businesses to collect money owed to them.

For the second year, the Retail Alliance will acknowledge the efforts of local law enforcement officers in assisting retailers. The association will present its 2005 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award, which recognizes the important contributions made by area law enforcement professionals in promoting safety and security in places of business.
