Retail Alliance Sponsors Retail Leasing Seminar
January 6, 2005
A lease is probably the most important document a small business can have. That’s why the Retail Alliance is sponsoring a Retail Leasing seminar from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday, February 3, at TowneBank, 137 Mt. Pleasant Road, in Chesapeake.
Robert G. Gurnee, vice president of real estate for Dollar Tree Stores, Inc., will cover essential aspects on the basics of retail leasing. Understanding and negotiating a lease is critical because it affects the business in a number of ways including costs and security of tenure. Retail leasing costs are likely to be one of the biggest costs after the initial investment in a business. For these and other reasons, leases should always take high priority. Securing tenure is also very important because success of the business may depend on visibility, accessibility and proximity to other services. Also, length of time in the same location often contributes to the success of retail businesses.
Gurnee has been vice president of real estate since 1997. Previously, he served as director of real estate and director of analysis with Dollar Tree. Before joining the company, Gurnee was a project development manager and controller for Armada/Hoffler Enterprises and Goodman, Segar, Hogan, Hoffler.
